Help & Frequently Asked Questions

We hope that we've made the Open Studios process fun and easy for you! We have provided a list of Frequently Asked Questions to help guide you through the process; if you have a question that can't be answered here please feel free to email jp[at]artspacenh.org for help. Please be patient, as the Artspace staff is small and may take a few days in responding to queries. We also encourage artists to help one another in preparing for CWOS.

Registration

  • How do I register?

Please refer to our Registration Page, which will be live after July 23.

  • How much does it cost to register?

The CWOS festival fee covers your artist membership, participation in the Festival Exhibition at Artspace, and your presence in the printed guide. The total CWOS fee is $75—that fee is comprised of the cost of your membership ($50) and the cost of participating in CWOS ($25). If you have already renewed your membership, and it will not expire before the end of October, you will only be charged $25. The Alternative Space supplement is $25. For further information, please refer to our Registration Page.

  • Can I volunteer in lieu of the entry fee?

After September 1, registered artist who wish to volunteer at the Alternative Space may contact Shannon Connors (shannon[at]artspacenh.org). Artists who volunteer at least eight hours will have their membership/registration fee reduced in November.

  • Can I participate in the CWOS festival without becoming a member of Artspace?

No. This year all participating artists must become members of Artspace—it is included in the cost of participation. Membership at Artspace allows access to your images and artist profile. You will also receive our e-news, information about artist opportunities throughout the year, and discounts for ticket workshops and Artspace merchandise.

  • What if I don't remember whether or not I've renewed my membership?

Try to log into your artist profile on our website, artspacenh.org. Those whose membership has expired will be alerted. If you have forgotten your password, you may select the prompt that says "I forgot my password" and your password will be sent to your email address.

  • In which weekend should I participate?

    • Artists with studios in New Haven, West Haven, North Haven, and Hamden should participate in the Passport Weekend, October 6/7.
    • Artists with studios in Erector Square should participate in the Erector Square Weekend, October 13/14.

Further information on each weekend can be found on our Getting Started Page.

  • How do I rent a studio for Weekends 1 or 2?

Several venues offer temporary studio space for rent. Any rental fees are to be arranged between the venue and the artist directly.

Weekend 1 (Passport Weekend) October 6/7: West Cove Studio & Gallery, along with A-Space Gallery, will rent spaces for CWOS registered artists. 10,000 square feet of space is available. For further information contact Roy Smith (phone: 609.638.8501, email: rts3rd[at]hotmail.com). Furniture designers interested in showing their work should contact Jeff Carter (j2gcarter[at]gmail.com).

Weekend 2 (Erector Square) October 13/14: Contact Kathi Telman at 203.865.5055 or erectorsquare[at]yahoo.com

  • What if I don’t yet have a studio address?

Please contact jp[at]artspacenh.org to explain your needs and plans. We will do our best to point you to possible solutions.

  • What is the difference between the Alternative Space and renting a space at West Cove or Erector Square?

Both options have their distinct advantages. The Alternative Space will be open for several weeks for artists to be able to conceive and mount their installations in the presence of other artists. The Alternative Space is easily accessible from I-95 and will be seen by 185,000 people who drive by each day. West Cove and Erector Square are available for the weekend only, but offer move-in-ready conditions.

  • What can I show in the Festival Exhibition at Artspace?

Each artist is invited to select a small (18” X 18” X 18”) work on paper or pedestal for the exhibition. Works must be from 2010 or later. Participation in the Festival Exhibition at Artspace is an integral part of the overall experience.

  • What happens if I sell my work during CWOS?

Works sold through the Festival Exhibition organized by Artspace are subject to a 30% commission. For sales made during your weekend, please consider making a tax-deductible donation of a portion of your sale to help us cover the costs of the festival. In past years, artists have contributed 20% of such sales. We thank you for your generosity.

  • How can I help publicize the CWOS Festival and my participation in it?

After you register, Artspace will furnish you with a digital invitation for you to distribute. CWOS graphics and social media guides for Facebook and Twitter can be found on the Press Toolkit Page starting in August. Our marketing works in tandem with the efforts of our participating artists, so please spread the word via your own social media network. During September and October, check your email and Artspace’s Facebook page regularly for updates and CWOS news.
